At Gymea Retreat & Spa, Uki, our mission is to establish a sustainable, and socially responsible retreat center and healing spa. Our aim is to make a lasting impact on human sustainability by offering world-class sustainable learning and ecotourism experiences in the breathtaking region of northern New South Wales, Australia.

Gymea The Name
When we first set foot on this property, we were joined by friends to explore the sprawling grounds. Among the hidden gems we discovered were magnificent Gymea Lilies, standing tall at an impressive height of 6 meters. Little did we know then that these incredible plants would become our namesake, carrying deep significance. Allow us to share with you excerpts from Australian Bush Flower Essences that beautifully capture the essence of Gymea Lily (Doryanthes excelsa).

The Founders
Sonia and Stephen were drawn to this land in 2011. The retreat centre was in a state of damage and disrepair. Being a little shocked by this and initially believing it wasn’t what they were looking for, they moved on with their search. Sometime later they felt an unexplicable tug to go and view the property again, and this time, took the time to feel into the energy of the land. Although they did not have a clear vision of what the role of the property was at the time, they were drawn to place a buyers’ bid, and the renovations began. The name Gymea also “landed” when a group of friends visited the property, saw the Gymea Lily plant, and discussed the meaning of it’s Bush Flower Essence which resonated greatly.
The more the Armytages worked on the property, the more understanding they gained to how special a piece of land this was. After running the property as a bnb for a time, they realised that the land had so much more to offer, and decided to open it to Retreat Hosts who ran their workshops with integrity. The retreat centre has grown and flourished, mostly through word of mouth, drawing people in from all over the world to come and experience transformative journeys on this very sacred land.
